La Vall Fosca obtains the biosphere certificate

Last January, La Vall Fosca obtained the Biosphere certification as a destination and information center. It is a worldwide certificate that certifies that an effort is being done to develop sustainable tourism initiatives, while promoting social, cultural and local singularity.

Currently La Vall Fosca, the Epicenter (Geoparc visitors center), and Terradets Hotel , are the only ones to have the Biosphere certification in Pallars Jussà. Other destinations, facilities or companies such as Capdella Hydroelectric Museum, Arturo Hotel or Pobla de Segur Tourist Office are in the process.

This certification has been possible thanks to the support of Patronat de Turisme de la Diputació de Lleida (Tourism Board of the Provincial Council), which has facilitated the Biosphere Sustainable Lifestyle platform, which helps the sector to develop personalized sustainability plans by selecting more than 400 sustainable activities and actions, linked with the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.

According to the Biosphere certification , destinations must meet the 17 sustainable development goals (SDG) that the UN approved in the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Tourism. The objectives set that the eradication of poverty must go hand in hand with strategies that promote economic growth and cope a series of social needs such as education, health, social protection and employment prospects, while combating climate change and protecting the environment.

In the process of preparing the certification, Vall Fosca has had to prove actions that are carried out, such as: distributing information about different attractions of tourist interest to avoid overcrowding at certain points; conduct nature learning experiences for visitors; collaborate with social projects such as Alba Jussà; clean and maintain roads as a heritage recovery initiative; use osmosis filtered water sources; eliminate plastic cups and bottles; buy and consume local products and services, etc.

Other internal aspects of the organizations are also valued, such as implementing policies that guarantee the protection of labor rights or offering courses according to the needs of employees.
